A common way of reading and responding to e-mail is to use software known as an e-mail client. This is a program which you install and then configure in order to access your e-mail account.

Certain operating systems, including Windows Vista; Windows 8 and Mac OS, as well as several versions of Linux, include their own built-in e-mail programs. Owners of Microsoft Office will also have access to an the e-mail client Microsoft Outlook, depending on the version of Office purchased.

If you are running Windows 7 or are simply looking for another e-mail client then a good choice would be Mozilla Thunderbird. Thunderbird is a free e-mail client made by the same organisation behind the Firefox browser.
